SAAHJ to award $40,000 in scholarships to local students

Applications Now Available to Bexar County Communications, Journalism Students

SAN ANTONIO (March 9, 2016) – The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists (SAAHJ) announces it will award $40,000 in scholarships this year to deserving Bexar County students pursuing careers in the media, communications and journalism.

Applications and requirements for the 2016-2017 scholarships are now available online at www.saahj.org/scholarships
Bexar County students committed to pursuing careers in the communications industry, such as broadcasting or print media, advertising, public relations, photojournalism, visual arts and multimedia are encouraged to apply.

The scholarships, of up to $5,000 each, are available to high school seniors, undergraduate and graduate college students enrolled full-time at a college during the entire 2016-2017 academic year.

Only applicants attending college in San Antonio and students with a permanent address in Bexar County (but attending college elsewhere in the U.S.) are eligible. Applications must be postmarked by Saturday, May 27, 2016.

“SAAHJ is pleased to be able to offer scholarships to deserving students who want to further their education,” said Diana R. Fuentes, association president. “Our members work diligently year-round to raise money for these becas with the help of visionary corporate and individual sponsors.”

Scholarships will be presented at the 18th Annual San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists Scholarship & Awards Gala on Friday, August 19, 2016 at the Grand Hyatt (600 E. Market).

“We are again planning to distribute $40,000 in scholarships, one of the largest amounts given by a local nonprofit group,” Fuentes said. “We encourage you to apply early. It takes time to process the paperwork and everyone on our scholarship committee is a volunteer.”
