The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists has officially entered into a legal agreement with the San Antonio Area Foundation to move its scholarship applications and payments on-line.
SAAHJ President Joey Palacios met with SAAF Director of Development and Inclusive Philanthropy Martin Acevedo for a Friday morning signing ceremony. SAAHJ board members Tony Quesada, Diego Aparicio and Sergio Chapa were on hand as witnesses.
Under the agreement, SAAHJ will deposit $50,000 into a scholarship fund created by SAAF. There are monthly fees but the money deposited will earn interest and is expected to do so at a rate higher than the funds withdrawn.
SAAF will create the on-line scholarship application over the next few weeks.
A five-member committee comprised of KSAT-TV News Director Bernice Kearney, Muñoz Public Relations CEO Cynthia Muñoz, San Antonio Express-News columnist Gilbert Garcia and SAAHJ board members Diego Aparicio and Sergio Chapa has been selected to review the scholarship applications next year.
Earlier this year, SAAHJ held a special election where members voted unanimously to approve the agreement.
It’s a huge leap forward for SAAHJ and our students!
