SAAHJ is hosting its 20th annual Scholarships and Awards Gala at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, August 11th, at the Grand Hyatt in downtown San Antonio.
Individual tickets are $125 and may be purchased through the SAAHJ gala page. Table sponsorship levels for the gala range from $1,500 to $10,000. For more information on sponsorships, contact Elaine Ayala at (210) 250-3402.
It will be a fun, celebrity-studded event with prominent community leaders and professionals for a night of camaraderie and celebration, recognizing accomplished Latino role models and shining a spotlight on our youth.
As many know, SAAHJ encourages and supports higher education. Over the past 20 years, nearly 200 college students have received scholarship awards ranging from $500 to $5,000 to assist with the cost of higher education. This year, SAAHJ will award $34,500 in scholarships at the gala, thanks to funds raised by the annual event.
Joining SAAHJ this year as the gala’s keynote speaker and recipient of the Corazon de Oro Award, is Carmen Yulín Cruz, mayor of San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a result of her tireless commitment to the people of San Juan and Puerto Rico and dedication to recovery efforts post Hurricane María, Mayor Cruz has received various recognitions and awards, including the Martin Luther King Centre Justice, Peace and Freedom Award and Humanitarian Leadership Award in 2018. This year, she was in TIME Magazine’s list of the “100 Most Influential People of 2018”.
San Antonio Express-News reporter Elaine Ayala will be honored with the Henry Guerra Lifetime Achievement Award for Excellence in Journalism.
American Indians of Texas at the Spanish Colonial Missions will receive the Community Service Award for its work to preserve and protect the culture and traditions of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation as well as the other indigenous people of the Spanish colonial missions of South Texas and Northern Mexico.
