In collaboration with the San Antonio Association of Black Journalists, SAAHJ is launching an event series re-examining the role media plays in covering issues of police violence and racial discrimination – what we’re doing right, and what needs to change.
In this first virtual panel, called Covering a Racial Reckoning, we hear perspectives on the media from leaders across several fields.
It will be moderated by SAAHJ member and Express-News columnist Cary Clack, and includes a panel with community activist Celeste Alana Brown, African-American studies scholar Carey Latimore, public relations professional Chris Reed-Ogba and Texas Public Radio reporter and former SAAHJ president Joey Palacios.
“Just as the media holds those in power accountable in our communities, it’s also important we hold ourselves accountable and eliminate bias in our industry when we see it,” said Silvia Foster-Frau, board president. “After a year of witnessing and covering racial inequities in the criminal justice system and amid the pandemic, this series that turns the spotlight on the journalism industry — on ourselves — is a long time coming.”
