It’s a great day for KENS 5 viewers and especially San Antonio Latinos! The CBS-affiliate announced it was making Roma Villavicencio a permanent host on its morning lifestyle show, Great Day SA.
The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists enthusiastically applauds KENS 5 for promoting Villavicencio, a bilingual Latina of Mexican descent, to this highly visible platform. We believe that with this move, KENS 5 has displayed a commitment to providing diverse role models to its young viewers in San Antonio. KENS 5 has also shown that it recognizes the value of having bilingual journalists who can connect with San Antonio’s Spanish-speaking populations.
“Congratulations to Roma, and many thanks to KENS 5 for elevating a Latina and role model for our community,” said SAAHJ President Silvia Foster-Frau.
Kens 5 hired Villavicencio in 2016 to be a news reporter, before moving her to the popular Great Day in SA show in 2017. Villavicencio has been filling in on the show’s desk since Cristina Blackwell “retired for the mommy life” last year, according to the show.
We especially love something that Villavicencio told MySA because it echoes what we at SAAHJ often say.
“Something my father tells me often and I feel is worthy of sharing with you now is: ‘iAdelante!’ Let’s move forward together in this new era of Great Day SA,” Villavicencio said.
Cheers to that, Roma! iFelicidades!
