SAAHJ celebrates vice-president’s new job at The Dallas Morning News!

Krista Torralva, vice-president of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, recently accepted a job covering breaking news and courts at The Dallas Morning News!

A tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion, Torralva will not be leaving San Antonio without having left her mark.

She joined SAAHJ soon after she arrived in San Antonio nearly three years ago and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming SAAHJ secretary in 2019 and ascending to the vice-presidency a year later.

“We are going to miss Torralva dearly, but we take solace in knowing there are journalists in Dallas who will soon benefit from her arrival just as we did,” said outgoing SAAHJ president Silvia Foster-Frau. “During such a challenging year for Latinos and journalists, I was really lucky to have Krista by my side.”

Torralva was instrumental in landing SAAHJ’s $20,000 Shea Serrano Scholarship, which debuted last year.

She hosted a successful SAAHJ event with Serrano and Adam Serwer, an acclaimed staff writer for The Atlantic, in Nov. 2019 that led to the scholarship’s formation.

A proud native of Corpus Christi, Torralva covered courts for her hometown paper, The Corpus Christi Caller-Times, before moving to the Orlando Sentinel to cover courts and crime. She landed her job as an education reporter for the San Antonio Express-News in April 2018.

Torralva’s father was born and raised in San Antonio. She said it has always been her second home.

“Since moving to San Antonio in my adulthood, I have learned so much about myself and my heritage,” Torralva said. “I found a familia in SAAHJ and I will forever hold this organization and this city in my heart.”

Discussion about Torralva’s position on the SAAHJ board will take place during the special election meeting on Feb. 6, with a vote planned for the general membership meeting on Feb. 20.
