SAAHJ Special Meeting on Saturday, August 26th

The San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists Board is calling for a special membership meeting on Saturday, August 26th.

The SAAHJ board is considering entering a legal agreement with the San Antonio Area Foundation (SAAF) that would move our scholarship process 100 percent on-line.

The decision to enter into a contract will be made at the above mentioned meeting on August 26th at 10:00 AM. A majority vote among those present will determine if we go forward. SAAF is located in the Pearl at 303 Pearl Pkwy, San Antonio, TX 78215.

On Tuesday, a majority of the SAAHJ Board met with Cadence Corbin and Martin Acevedo of the San Antonio Area Foundation.

After an hour long presentation to the SAAHJ board, President Joey Palacios, Secretary Tony Quesada, Treasurer Angelica Garza, At-Large Print Board Member Sergio Chapa, and At-large Broadcast Board Member Diego Aparicio unanimously approved the following motion:

The board recommends to the general membership that the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists partner with the San Antonio Area Foundation to administer the SAAHJ’s scholarship fund.

Vice President Nora Lopez was present for most of the meeting as well but needed to return to work before it concluded. She indicated via e-mail afterwards she is in support.

Cadence and Martin will be at the August 26th meeting to better explain the scholarship fund.

A short breakdown:

SAAF would be the administrator of the SAAHJ Scholarship

SAAF would create an on-line scholarship application based on our requirements

Applicants can still submit all of their professional and student work via the application

The cost for SAAF managing the fund would be about $1,000 per year but this could change depending on the fund size

SAAHJ will still be able to create a committee to review and select awardees based on our direction and rubric given our parameters
This would require creating a fund of at least $10,000, that will need to be maintained at that amount and will accrue interest. Since our scholarship awards between $30,000 and $40,000 annually we would likely create an initial fund of $50,000.

The board is recommending we move forward with creating the fund, however the decision will be up to a majority of those present.

If you have any questions, you can reach out to Joey Palacios – SAAHJ President – directly at 210-216-9703.

We need to let the San Antonio Area Foundation know our intentions by August 31st.

We hope to see you at our meeting

¡Adelante!
– The SAAHJ Board
