Dear San Antonio-area educators,
On behalf of the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, I’d like to reintroduce SAAHJ and what it offers your students. Our non-profit includes local journalists, public relations professionals, students and others interested in the communications industry. Since 1987, our organization has worked to help news outlets better reflect the diverse population of Texas by boosting Hispanic and Latino/a/x presence in newsrooms by focusing on three areas:
- SCHOLARSHIPS For more than 25 years, SAAHJ has proudly awarded hundreds of local students with scholarships to pursue their higher education in journalism and communications. In 2023, we awarded a record $65,000 and raised more than $150,000 at our annual fundraising gala. Empowering underrepresented Hispanic and Latino/a/x journalism students is at the core of our mission. Our 2024 scholarship application for graduating high school or college students who demonstrate financial need is now live. Apply for our 2024 SAAHJ scholarships until Feb. 24 via the San Antonio Area Foundation’s general scholarship application.
- COMMUNITY OUTREACH More than 100 journalists and communicators, educators and students, are actively engaged with our organization. We host monthly meetings and networking events for our members and we do outreach in the community to foster engagement, learning and collaboration. Become a member or encourage your students to become a member on our Membership Page. The earlier they network, the better! Also, let us know if you’d like to schedule a visit from one of our SAAHJ members for your students or organization.
- CAREER DEVELOPMENT SAAHJ offers events throughout the year with programming that focuses on timely, relevant issues. These programs are valuable to faculty, professionals and students.
Diversity in newsrooms is more important than ever. We want educators and students in high schools, colleges and other learning institutions in the San Antonio area to know that we are a resource for future Hispanic and Latino/a/x journalists and communications professionals.
Please help us encourage qualifying high school seniors and college students (bachelor’s or master’s level) to apply for our 2024 SAAHJ scholarships until Feb. 24 via the San Antonio Area Foundation’s general scholarship application: saafdn.org/scholarships/apply-for-a-scholarship/.
Reach out to me or any of our board members, cc’d here, with your questions and let us know if you would like one of our board members to speak to your students virtually or in-person about the scholarship. Thank you, and we look forward to getting to know you and your students!
Gratefully,
Nancy M. Preyor-Johnson
President, 2023-2024
